Kyla and Brek reach for Reve and me, and pull us into the Observatory. Kale is in the doorway to the balcony, shouting orders I can’t hear. Thoud, Lyam and Jack all look to be meditating, but I imagine they’re trying to sense the cause of the explosion. Reve shakes my shoulders and I turn my attention to him but I can’t hear anything except a high-pitched whine. I point to my ears and tell him I can’t hear, although I have no idea if my voice is working. He runs to Lyam, rouses him from his trance-like state and brings him over. I point at my ears and shake my head. Lyam closes his eyes and places his palms over my ears. I feel a mild warmth as the ringing begins to subside.

‘Thank you,’ I say to Lyam, relieved to hear my own voice. ‘What was that?’

Reve looks to Thoud who has opened his eyes. ‘The cell containing the vessel in the dungeon has been breached. Someone came through the vessel and caused the explosion, followed by Amirah’s soldiers. Our defences are destroyed. The warriors are engaged in battle as we speak, but there have been casualties already.’

Reve opens the doors to alert Kyla and Brek who are standing guard. The muffled and distant sounds of shouting and clanging metal can be heard. My stomach clenches in realisation. This is it.

‘I’ve alerted Syver,’ Jack calls to Kale who is pacing the balcony. ‘He says to stay here. The enemy is almost upon us.’

‘The enemy is already here!’ Kale calls back. He points towards the forest surrounding the castle. We rush to the window to see the tops of the trees begin to sway and part as we glimpse a large, grey mound moving through the canopy.

‘That must be the beast,’ Reve says.

‘The Roveyo,’ Lyam says, standing beside me.

‘That thing is huge!’ Penn exclaims.

‘Are we just to stand here and watch?’ I ask, my heart thumping. ‘I don’t think I can do that.’

‘We must,’ Reve says, clasping my hand. ‘Especially you. You heard what Syver said. Amirah is the real threat, not this creature.’

I look to Kale, pacing and running his hands through his hair.

‘What’s wrong?’ I ask.

‘Keath was positioned in the dungeons,’ he says, forehead knotted.

A lump forms in my throat, understanding his concern for his brother.

‘I can go…’ I start.

‘No!’ Kale yells. ‘Absolutely not.’

‘I can go,’ says Penn. ‘I can conceal myself and take a look. And check on Jed too.’

‘Jed should be safe in his cell,’ I say to Penn, squeezing his shoulder.

Kale looks from Penn to me, and back towards the forest. The warning wail of a horn carries across the air from the Tower of Light.

Kale faces Penn. ‘Alright, go. But be quick, and be careful.’

Penn nods and rushes from the room, glimmering towards invisibility as he goes.

We turn our attention back to the forest as the grey mass makes its way closer. Syver’s warriors stand in perfect formation, awaiting their orders. A loud roar reverberates through the air as the beast reaches the edge of the forest.
